15-5PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel that provides high strength, good corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties at temperatures up to 600°F (316°C) and good toughness in both the longitudinal and transverse directions in both base metal and welds. 15-5 PH stainless steel is the ferrite-free version of 17-4PH stainless steel. In both strongly oxidizing and reducing media, as well as by atmospheric exposures, The corrosion resistance of 15-5PH stainless steel exceeds types 410 and 431, and is approximately equal to 17-4PH. The general corrosion resistance of this material is best in the fully hardened condition, and decreases slightly as the aging temperature is increased. Also, 15-5PH can get good resistance to stress-corrosion cracking is gained by hardening at temperatures of 1025ºF (551ºC) and higher.
15-5PH stainless steel is readily machined in both the solution-treated and various age-hardened conditions. In the solution-treated condition, it machines similarly to stainless Types 302 and 304. In age-hardened conditions, the machinability will improve as the hardening temperature is increased.
15-5PH stainless steel is weldable by the common shielded fusion and resistance welding processes, it has equivalent weldability of 17-4PH. When a filler metal is required, AWS E/ER630 welding consumables should be considered to provide welds with properties matching those of the base metal. Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended, since carbon pickup in the weld may occur. Normally, welding in the solution-treated condition, the material can be directly aged to the desired strength level after welding.
