Why Is Duplex Steel Important To Autos?

What is Duplex Steel?

Duplex Steel is a mixture, obtained by processing ferrite and martensite. The ferrite contains pure iron, contributes ductility, while the martensite creates a high tensile strength, the duplex Steel has the above two characteristics at the same time. Ronsco standing stock duplex steel 2205, 2507 plate; duplex steel 2205, 2507 coil; duplex steel 2205, 2507 strip.

How Formable And Strength Is DP Steel?

Among high strength steels, duplex steel is known for its combination of high strength and good formability. In formability, the n-value, a measure of high initial work hardening, is a good indicator of the level of formability of a metal, duplex steel's higher n-values indicate greater strain hardening capacity and the ability to distribute strain across a finished product. In strength, Duplex steels feature a high tensile strength, it's most common tensile strength are 600, 800, and 1,000 MPa. The yield strength of duplex steel is also high, and after work hardening during forming, duplex steels can also be bake hardened, which further increases their yield strength.

How Does Duplex Steel Benefit the Automotive Industry?

Compared with conventional high strength low alloy steels, duplex steels offer higher strength without reduced formability, not only meet the same design requirements as heavier metals, but also reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel economy, has surged in popularity in automotive manufacturing. In addition, another advantage to the duplex steel is absorbe large amounts of energy, which is highly beneficial in crash situations. These characteristics, combined with a low cost of production, make duplex steels highly desirable for automotive applications, such as  roof outer, door outer, body side outer, package tray, floor panel etc,.
