Nickel Alloys: Monel

Date:2023-05-26View:266Tags:Ronsco, Monel 400 Plate, Monel K500 Plate

Monel is a family of nickel-copper alloys, also contains small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon, carries high tensile strength and strong resistance to corrosion. Compared to carbon steel,Monel can cost over 3 times as much (and 5 to 10 times more than copper and nickel). Its use is generally limited to applications where there are no cheaper alternatives. Such as, it is used for everything from guitar strings and valve pistons on high-quality musical instruments to aircraft construction and aviation safety wiring. Ronsco is supplier of Monel sheets, plates, coils, strips, we can supply stocks of grades of Monel products, including (but not limited to) Monel 400, Monel K500, Monel R405, Monel 404. With our vast processing and machining services, supply small or large orders cut to size and finished as required. Please email service@ronsteel.com for more information or to get a quote.

Aerospace: In aerospace, Monel is often used to aircraft's exhaust manifolds, carburettor valves and sleeves, as well as the gears and chains that control landing gear etc,. Considered similar to steel in a number of ways, Monel has a high resistance to weight-bearing stress (known as tensile strength) and can be welded easily.  Monel also can retain its strength at very high temperatures, allowing it to maintain its shape at high atmospheric flight speeds, a trade off against the increased weight of the parts due to Monel's high density, so it is also can used for safety wiring in the aircraft maintenance in high-temperature areas to ensure that fasteners cannot come undone, while stainless wire is used in other areas for its lower cost.

Oil Production And Refining: Within the oil industry, because Monel offers exceptional resistance to hydrofluoric acid in all concentrations up to the boiling point, it is used in direct contact with concentrated hydrofluoric acid. Besides, Monel has a resistance to many forms of sulphuric and hydrochloric acids under reducing conditions, is arguably the most resistant of all the commonly used engineering alloys. For Example, Monel 400 is employed in crude petroleum stills and crude oil distillation towers and Monel K500 is often used in oil and gas production safety lifts and valves as well as oil-well tools and instruments.

Marine Applications: Monel is often found in marine applications due to its corrosion resistance makes,  and ideal in applications such as piping systems, pump shafts, seawater valves, trolling wire, and strainer baskets. In the Monel grade, Monel 400 and Monel K500 are are considered to be the first choices. Monel 400 exhibits excellent weldability, is often used for the high tolerance tubing, such as seawater valves and pump shafts (these tubes can also be found in chemical plant equipment, boiler feeders, and heat exchangers). Monel K500 is combination of very low corrosion rates in high-velocity sear water and high strength, making it particularly suitable for centrifugal pump shafts in marine applications.

Chemical: Monel has high resistance against corrosion by acids and oxygen, widely used in the chemical industry. For example, Monel apparatus can handle corrosive fluorides. Monel also can be used in regulators for reactive cylinder gases like hydrogen chloride, where PTFE is not appropriate because of the high delivery pressures required. This will sometimes include a Monel manifold and taps in line before the regulator, making the regulator to be flushed with a dry, inert gas after use, to add further protection to the system.
